Two-handed (or more) control

The virtual realm and the material realm have their strengths and their weaknesses, and virtual tools certainly have a lot to add, but is a 3-button mouse or graphics tablet really the best we can do ?

We can use either a mouse or a digitizer tablet\pen to modify objects, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to manipulate your orientation at the same time, perhaps even while drawing\sculpting\ etc. ?

I imagine a time when one hand can control the tool, while the other hand (using something like a 3D-Connexion Navigator) can change the orientation of the user of the tool. Another application of this two-handed idea I can imagine is being able to do the equivalent of a ribbon dance, where a paintbrush in Grease Pencil can paint lines in 3D space as one moves\dances around the space, even as the digitizer pen\brush stroke's pressure variations allow for changes in density, which could even potentially be mapped to color intensities.

Coming from the use of multiple MIDI and OSC controllers as applied to sound and music, I see the enhanced control possibilities being applied in all sorts of ways, including physics and animations, not unlike the concept of a mo-cap suit being used for creating 3D artwork itself, mapping control sources to procedural node destinations.

testure

there's not a whole lot of meat on this proposal, got any specific ideas besides blue sky daydreams? blender already supports NDOF devices natively (such as the 3dconnexion devices), and via the python API there are even addons experimenting with MIDI and OSC interfaces. VR is also being worked on.
