Fix the Hair! Big Update To Hair

Edit: Wow! Thanks for all the love! Hopefully it gets an update soon.

Hair needs a complete rewrite. Hair is not smooth. Even with the principled hair bsdf the shine isn't right and hair has to brushed over and over to look smooth. Viewport hair's shine isn't informative and laggy if you try to see it shaded in viewport.

Hair is already in a rewrite and you can try the experimental version for 3.3

But the stuff that you mentioned seems to correlate to using the wrong viewport settings:

  • You can change the viewport settings so that they work better for hair and you can also install your custom matcap that would work the best for you.
  • You can increase the viewport subdivision of the hairs (doesn't change the point count for grooming).

Here is a quick test I did with better viewport settings
