Smart renaming

Actual problem: I have a hand with bones: Palm.L, Thumb.A.L, Finger.A.L, Finger.B.L, Finger.C.L, Finger.D.L

When I extrude the bones I get: Thumb.A.L.001, Thumb.A.L.002, Thumb.A.L.003 and so on....

Would it be possible to make it instead: Thumb.B.L, Thumb.C.L, Thumb.D.L?

I know nada of Scripting, but I guess that on the act of duplicating Blender could look for stuff ending with ".L" or ".R" (dot+L or dot+R) and if it's found, then look if there is before the dot a number or letters followed by another dot, maybe limiting the decimal houses to 3 (I don't know if more would make the process slower) like:

Thumb.001.L - Found 001 - Next is: 002 or Thumb.AA,L - Found AA - Next is: AB

In the case of objects, let's say I have a Car with tires. The body is named "Car001" and we have "TireFront.001.L" "TireFront.001.R" "TireRear.001.L" and "TireRear.001.L" and "TireRear.001.R"

When duplicating the Car, I would get: "Car002" "TireFront.002.L" "TireFront.002.R" "TireRear.002.L" and "TireRear.002.L" and "TireRear.002.R"

instead of "Car002" "TireFront.001.L.001" "TireFront.001.R.001" "TireRear.001.L.001" and "TireRear.001.L.001" and "TireRear.001.R.001"

EDIT

As @Luciano Muñoz: commented I must say, when working with an Armature it doesn't use the "mirror" function because it doesn't read the R or L. If I have a hand with "Finger.001.L" and extrude it, Blender generates "Finger.001.L.001" and will not mirror whatever I do with "Finger.001.R.001" and I need to triple work to rename everything to make "Finger.001.L.001" to "Finger.002.L" and "Finger.001.R.001" to "Finger.002.R"

I hope that explains the problem better.

My idea is not to change the renaming system of Blender, just making it more useful in cases where object names ends with L or R.

well i've found that if you go Tire.L.000 then it will name the subsequents correctly, it's a bit annoying not having the number inbetween instead of at the end of the name, but it works. what would be really nice, is to have in the preferences a convention setup where you can tell blender how to behave in this regard.

@Luciano Muñoz: Edited to explain why that's not good

Simple Renaming Panel Add-On... maybe (it's free): blenderartists.org/t/addon-simple-renaming-panel/676639

@CoB-666: sadly not compatible with 2.8
