3d view click vs timeline click

Not sure if i'm the only one but it feels wrong; timeline click is the other mouse click as compared to 3d object click. (if you think get me there in both cases)..

I tried to make this work. I found that with the new click drag you can combine in the dopesheets but you deselect frames each time you drag the time. And placing time needs a double click. The only solution to combine workflows to one-click is by making a time track and time handle. Edit time by clicking in that track and edit keyframe on all other tracks. Typical place would be in the place of the frame count indicator. In software like Softimage, You can also click and drag the timeline from the edit tracks. But not place time. You place time in the time track.

Right now blender only allows placing and dragging the timeline, but you need to select and drag frames, and deselect frames by clicking off frames annnd place the timeline without deselecting the frames. It's impossible right now till a time track and selectable handles on cursor is implemented.

Definitely makes sense! I've always used left click so working in the timeline has always been awkward

I have created a way to have it all in the same click - might release it on the Bforartists fork.

It is better to have separated clicks. Main click for selection: same way as for object. Another click for frame-jump. «Objects» for timeline are keys. Not the frame-pointer. And the frame pointer is analog of 3d-cursor. So all is okay and consistent. Just take it.

It is not better, it's just a way of thinking & designing things, with pros & cons like any other.

Any other software uses one mouse button for selecting & managing stuff, including moving the playhead. The other mouse button is used for contextual menus.
Blender does the same with LCS in the viewport, it should do the same in other editors including dopesheet, timeline and graph editor.

As for RCS, it is consistent with the viewport behaviour. But IMO it's not the best solution, as the 3d cursor is rarely used globally, while the playhead is intensivelly used as soon as you need to manage the time. The playhead coulld have a behavior similar to a gizmo.

* @-L0Lock- * {attachment 140256jpg} ok. Here is situation. How mouse clicks should act? LMB for moving frames and for moving playhead? Or RMB for moving frames?

* @ Vyacheslav * if its that terribly i'd prefer clicking on the bleu box "13" area or numbered bottem gray.

Simple click on the line = select
Click & drag = move the playhead.
Like the gizmo in 2.8's LMB.

A lot of other softwares also give more space between keyframes so you can click the playhead without hovering keys at the same time.
Also, they often use a handle, here on Blender it would be the head where the frame number is. Some actually allow to move the playhead only via that handle.
Some use the MMB, but it's already used for panning in Blender. Maybe it would work in the Industry Standard keymap.

But in LMB, it should work this way IMHO. And it should also be Considered for RMB.

It should be kept in mind that plenty other softwares face the same dilemas and they all did found solutions. They all are sources of inspiration.

* @ Vyacheslav * How about this? (All Left Click - Right can be for context menu) Image

* @ammusionist * I got this going yesterday - with the tweak/drag settings, drag being higher. Worked like a charm. But now the tweak pixel settings are hidden.

* @ammusionist * limited area, requres more precise clicks. For playhead, that used very often. So it is worse.

Ideas-Battleship

* @ Vyacheslav * If you highlight the selection with mouse hover over effects then there is no confusion which is going to be selected. If you hover your mouse over nothing then the playhead is highlighted which indicates to the user that it is going to move if you click there. If you hover your mouse over a dope dot then that gets highlighted then user know you are going to select that if you click.

Complaining about precise clicks is nonsense because the required precision is result of how zoomed in you are and not which mouse click you use.

Having a right click menu in dope sheets and graph editors would be a godsend alone and much more valuable than being to click different things with both mouse buttons.

* @o7216059 * okay, i see you arguments. Yes, context menus are nice. Yes, highlighting and zoom will help.

porky11

* @ Vyacheslav * I don't think, that's a problem. You need to be precise for clicking the keyframes anyway, and the timeline click is generous compared.

* @ondraise15 * You where able to create the proposal in code , sounds nice. Others sugested that the area became small, maybe in above picture raise the frame number bar slightly. I think though for serious animation work people wouldnt fall back to only the time line.
