Better Box Selection !
hello
so here's the concept:
-
when you drag the selection box right to left , its the standart blender box select mode
-
when you drag the selection box left to right , its the INSIDE of the box ONLY that is selected
-
the box tool could be activated when keeping a left or right click pushed in, then so, behaving like any other software select with left click (industry standart)
it may seams strange from someone who never tried it , but it work really really well, trust me , ask someone who use it , or try it by yourself ... its much more faster , and its the only good way to use box select for crowded scene , its adopted by A LOT of famous softs out there and integrating it into blender is a great way to make it more attractive to other softs users
also the same right to left , and left to right technique exist for the lasso selection tool ( autocad for example) and it also work really well

OMG this could be so useful wow
Excellent. Perhaps an option to enable / disable this option as well as, if enabled to choose which direction does what, for better flexibility.
If I'm not mistaken the Tweak system already allows us to dictate the cardinal directions for an action.
So what's missing, then, is that there aren't multiple methods/operators exposed to the python API for how to test the geometry inside/intersecting the marquee to determine what will be selected. The geometry tests are all hard-coded.
It is obvious that multiple tests do exist, because box selecting Edges in edit mode does not always behave the same way; it depends on what the marquee is overlapping as examined by this post on Stack Exchange: blender.stackexchange.com/questions/112307/can-3dview-border-select-behavior-be-changed
So a different way to think about this feature request is that we should ask for different geometry tests to be exposed to the python API so we can keybind them as desired for Box, Lasso, and maybe even Circle select.
I actually agree with the OP in the Stack Exchange link; I hate the way the box select works for Edges in edit mode. Even though it is deterministic it is a pain to work with. I expect that any component that intersects with the marquee area should be selected; I don't want Blender trying to think on my behalf. So if we could have multiple tests exposed for keybinding that could solve DB3D's use case and my own and make box select more flexible overall instead of being hard-coded.
Reading my thoughts!! It will be great to have this in blender!!!
This would be useful!
Nice one! Though I would rather make the proposal about exposing "drag direction" in the keymap settings (up, down, right, left). So the user could just assign whatever function he'd like. Another use case which I'd like to test out:
left => right = select.
right => left = deselect.
Middle mb would then be free for anything else. Sounds less hardcoded this way. I like the general idea very much, gj! :)
Wow ... this is great. I never used any software where this was the case but it sounds SUPER useful and intuitive. Upvote!
yes.. perfect this.. like in autocad...
This is very useful one for Blender, it reminds me with Skp, while in Max you would need to change between window mode and cross mode selection to do this kind of task. In Skp as simple as this post.
I'm not trying to convince the dev to make the same thing with other software out there, but this is the one that I think is important, if the dev have any better idea I would love to hear.
I strongly recommend you guys to upvote this one.

I've recently was looking for that option and as @Chris Kohl said there is such option in blender. when you typically box select whith left click:
Personally i find this system even better and I think that we should get used to it.
vote!
For your last point there you have it: blenderartists.org/t/a-proper-keymap-for-blender-2-8/1145406
By the bounding box I guess, taht would work.
