Ship blender with "use nodes" activated in the compositor
So I chatted with a friend that sometimes uses blender and knows a bit but not everything, so I made him use the compositor the first time ever and I started to explain the nodes he needs and he said yeah, but it is all greyed out. After wondering wtf is going on it hit me, you need to enable "use nodes" even in the compositor when it is unchecked the compositor is basically no use, none, really none of the functions are available so you can say is is dysfunctional without that checkbox... So I propse just shipping blender with that checkbox checked and save us all a few seconds of time and new users a lot of confusion.
Actually geonodes does not have it, all other nodes workspaces have this, and I really don't know why, as those are 'Nodes' workspaces after all. Does rendering take 0.00001 seconds longer when using the default nodesetup in the compositor compared to not using the nodes at all? is that worth it? can this be optimized? Or can the checkbox be removed as a legacy function?

Just get rid of the option. No need to have use nodes off being a different UX to the default node graph just as composite node with output node. If you don't want to use the compositor, we also have the option to use or not use the compositor in the render output tab under Post-Processing
AFAIK this option is needed in some render farms, so I'm not sure it will be removed. I might be wrong tho.
Could you elaborate more on why it is needed?
It does seem odd that one goes to the compositor tab, and actually cannot do much in the compositor, until they press another button that tells blender "yes, I actually want to use this workspace feature." ;)
agreed! :)
It does make sense for lights shaders because you can either use the light object's own material settings or combine it with the nodes. While objects shaders : disabling nodes is the same as using a default diffuse. If I wanted that, I'd use a diffuse node.
This suggestion is for the compositor only
Yes, but maybe it could be removed to other areas too.
