Map Range Node : Add Step parameter

An option for the Map Range Node to activate and set a step size.
Example : a range from 1 to 10 with a step of 1 will return : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. No 1.057, 5.100, ...

Could you please mark this a Done since it has been added into Master ? ;)

How do you handle the situation when the step isn't evenly divisible across the new range? Does the last step just get cut off?

AndySellers

* @Jason van Gumster * that could work, and have a notification icon beside the step option saying that will happen.

Bithur Author

* @Jason van Gumster * As the user can set the range, a step value would be enough IMHO. But it could be a number of steps

jason

* @Bithur * But the step value wouldn't be enough. What if you want the cut off to happen on the first step, for instance?

Bithur Author

* @Jason van Gumster * you stil can use the "old" methods with math nodes. The idea is to have something a bit more powerful but to keep it simple.
The Map Range Node already has 5 values and a parameter. I think adding 1 parameter and 1 value is enough but other options are interesting

Bithur Author

* @Jason van Gumster * It could also be a separate "steppizer" node with number of steps value and 3 parameters from min, from max and equalize

* @Bithur * Sounds like a preset for the Ramp node :)

Bithur Author

* @Jason van Gumster * Another thing I'd like to see in blender... :)
But :

  • Color Ramp uses colors, with gamma curves, it makes it not reliable for precise operations (not sure about that but I tried on UV mapping with errors)
  • have you tried to use 100 steps in a CR ?
  • you can't use negative colors

* @Bithur * I think adding a "Stepper function," node would be the best option as it wouldn't clutter up the existing map range node, and would also work with any other node that output a number value.
