Replacing the contents of a group node with a different group which has identical inputs/outputs should "keep the existing connections"
Node groups are great for modular design and reusability.
One feature that would improve their ease of use is some form of 'auto reconnect' when you replace a node group with a different group that has (at least some of) the same inputs and outputs.
For example: say I've created a Shading group that takes a
UV
input and provides a
Color
and
Alpha
output, and I use the drop down menu to change that group for another group that has matching outputs (ie, outputs that have the same
name
and
type
), right now one would have to manually reconnect all the outputs.
I think it would make sense for Blender to connect these outputs by default - in fact, I was slightly surprised that it didn't already, it seems like one would expect it to "stay connected". If the user doesn't want these connections - well, it's much faster to disconnect than it is to connect, especially for complex networks.
What do you think?
