seperate world hdri surface sampling for viewport rendering and main rendering.

you have to wait longer than john snow did for winter for the viewport update if you're using a 8k or above HDRI for the world.

Adding a seperate world surface sampling for viewport and main render would resolve this. This way you could set the sampling to manual for viewport, and make the map resolution something really small like 1024.

in Cycles you can already do this

* @billrey * i'm looking at 2.83 and their is still only one sampling setting which covers both viewport and proper rendering. Where are you looking?

Just to clarify, I'm not talking about samples in the render settings. I mean the samples in the world tab.

ahhh, now i get what you mean

lsscpp

In Simplify panel you can limit texture size for viewport/render

* @ Lsscpp * yes, but that reduces the actual appearance of the hdri, whereas reducing the sampling only reduces how many samples are used, so it still looks nice but uses less memory and updates faster (it does reduce the lighting/reflection quality though.

On my old laptop the performance is fine in Eevee with a 4K HDRI but performance sucks in Cycles with even a 512px image file.
