Ability to set Default value for any value / property

Each user is different, we all have habits, despite this, blender behave the same for all of us. I would like standardized way to set default value or defaut preset, for any value where it make sense for new objects, scenes, view layers, materials, modifiers.

Let me give a few exemples:

  • Bevel size , I like .005, I work in meters, 0.1 never work out of the box
  • Principled Specular 0, again personal choice but I prefer to start shading without reflection
  • Diffuse color 0.5 grey
  • sun color : blackbody / 5000
  • camera depth of field "on"
  • scene start.frame = 0
  • render engine = Cycles

The list could go on and on and I know a few settings/value can be set in the startup file but a lot can't

As a mockup, you will have to imagine a string of text "set as default value" just below of "reset to default Value" when you right click a value

it's a really good idea !

As mahesh said, you can set some of these in a startup file. I've set mine to use cycles as a default and I've also made some chages to my default camera, render settings and so on. Very useful, and being able to set modifier defaults would be also nice.

Yes! Most of the preferences you mentioned can be done using "Startup file". Just open a default fresh file. Make all necessary changes and save as startup file. (File menu> defaults> Save Startup File). However, it can not save settings like - Bevel size in your list. (Operator defaults)

* @mahesh0806 * I guess suggestion mean not only defaults you'll got in new file but default in general (like used to reset to). Also, as u already mentioned, you can't set something like modifier defaults via startup file so it have to be some "in general" solution.

Same for default primitives. I dont need 200 cm cube most of the time

oh I'm so for this and will totally set the default color to ffffff white and not that almost white...

* @Chris tt * pure white is not exist IRL, so it is almost white by default

TripTilt

* @ Vyacheslav * but I use b/w as values for masks and other shader math related thing more often then just setting a shader color, so for me that would be the ideal preset.

* @Chris tt * oh, I see.

* @ Vyacheslav * also for NPR is this useful. also it is not about changing blender factory defaults but being able to set user specific defaults exactly for exactly that :)

  • Adaptive subdivision
  • Attribute names, like Ocean modifier foam is going to be foam, foam.001, ..002
  • Same for Geometry nodes
  • Compositor nodes would save about 15s each click

Yessss.. do it

It would nice if they would allow to change default values atleast from Python API, currently it's not possible:

>>>bpy.types.Camera.bl_rna.properties['ortho_scale'].default = 25.0
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<blender_console>", line 1, in <module>
AttributeError: bpy_struct: attribute "default" from "FloatProperty" is read-only

This really should happen. I'm currently having to remember to uncheck "use lights" for every grease pencil layer and change my onion skin colours for every object. I have the same settings every time and have to set them every time.

Initial sun, camera, start frame and render engine can be set into startup file. shaders and bevel only as premade and hanging on the default cube.
