3d Mouse navigation during active commands - move/scale/rotate/extrude/etc and gizmo transform

As someone with a strong cad background, one of the features I dearly miss is having the ability to adjust the 3d view while in an active command. I understand the logic behind the ability to lock axes whilst in a command, but as an example, a vertex may need to get moved very far away in an area with many other vertices, where it would be impossible to move or snap to the right position with adjusting the 3d view.

For quite some time, we've had the ability to navigate with a 3d mouse in other interactive commands - while in C and B selection modes in 2.79 and also with the knife cut command, so I imagine it could be done for interactive command. Also, navigation should be possible while using the gizmo.

I agree, though I wouldn't limit it to just 3D mouse navigation. I don't personally use one and I find it irritating that I have to "drop" a tool and rotate my view to continue working.

That said, I believe the last time this was asked it was mentioned that due to a limitation with how Modal tools are written, it would require some kind of overhaul or redesign of how modal tools work, and from what I've seen there are no devs that have enough interest in tackling such a large system. But it would be nice for sure.

I can not remember exactly, but when i was trying modelling a years ago in blender, that feature was working.

  1. click on gizmo arrow. (press and release mouse)
  2. RELEASED mouse is dragging object..
  3. now change view and find desired snap vertex.
  4. new click terminates dragging and snaps on desired vertex.

It was version 2.49b am I right? I can not try it now - it requires old 2.6 python. With big changes on 2.5 this feature was downgraded and disappeared.

And yes it is crucial feature for CAD work. (I'm cad and architecture modeller)
