Modifier for converting vertex weight to vertex color
Currently, Blender has a useful vertex weight proximity modifier, but we are unable to use its output in materials since vertex weight is not directly accessible in shader nodes. This makes material blending animation difficult.
The current workaround is to "convert" the vertex weight to vertex color by copying vertex color from another object using a data transfer modifier, with the vertex weight as a mask.
There should be a more straightforward way to dynamically convert vertex weight to vertex color, and maybe vice-versa.

This can already be done via geometry nodes. Additionally, geometry nodes can do everything that vertex weight proximity or data transfer can, so you don't even need those modifiers.
AFAIK work is being done to port all the various current attributes (edge/vertex crease, edge/vertex bevel weight, vertex groups, etc.) to the new attributes system geonodes uses, and you will hopefully be able to more seamlessly use them via the attribute node then.
