option to add modifiers as deactivated
It happens that as you add a modifier, this creates a mess because it needs to be tweaked first. most of the time this isn't much of a problem, but when you are dealing with complex meshes, this can slow down blender for no valid reason.
i would suggest that if you add a modifier holding down a button (Alt would make sense to me) this gets added as deactivated, so that you can tweak the parameters before turning it on.
in the case of a subsurf supposed to be on just in renders, this would be a huge time saver :)

Yeah, nice idea. So they are by pressing a button deactivated in the viewport. That should be a really simple solution
yeah, alt would make sense to me. simple to implement but nice quality of life improvement :D
For the subsurf case, have you tried adding it via Ctrl+0 (on the top row, not the numpad)? That way it gets added with 0 subdivisions for the viewport
yeah that's generally what i do but... you know, not very coherent with the rest of blender :D
I think that's the kind of "secret knowledge" Blender should get rid of. Everything you do with shortcuts should be able to be done with interface buttons as well.
maybe, but it's hard to expose every feature without making the ui too busy
