think things like mantaflow and the non-geonode simulation tools are mostly running on the CPU which makes things a lot slower and for things like fluid sims - scale very poorly with increased voxel resolution. I remember hearing somewhere that they're hoping to rebuild the simulation tools in geometry nodes one day for better performance, modularity, etc, like how Houdini does it.
One suggestion I have for now is to buy FLIP Fluids, which is a great fluid sim tool for $75 that runs much faster - though obviously it'd be great to see official improvements.

Geometry Nodes run exclusively on CPU. Including Simulation Zones, Baking, Repeat/For Each Zones, etc. They are just much better optimized than Mantaflow, which is completely abandoned. The future is custom Geo Nodes solvers for everything.

yeah I'm not surprised it was abandoned. If I remember correctly, they said they had a physics programmer but they left ages back and so noone was able to continue developing Mantaflow. Heres hoping we do get a new fluid sim tool officially in Blender at some point

There wont be a dedicated fluid sim tool. We might see a couple dedicated fluid-sim nodes, but the entire system most likely will be done like hair assets/nodes that we have right now.
