Ability to reorder objects in the Dope Sheet editor

In a complex animation, objects whose keyframes are related in time can become separated at different ends of the dope sheet, making it extremely hard to compare their positions or move their keyframes simultaneously. For example, object A is the first item to be animated. Several days later after 50 other objects have been animated, you add object Z whose timing is related to object A. Object Z appears at the bottom of the Dope Sheet list, and there is no way to move it up next to Object A.  If you have more than one screenful of objects in the Dope Sheet, things get very awkward!

By what mechanism would objects be reordered? Hotkeys? Buttons? Drag and drop?

Also, how would you prevent accidentally re-ordering those channels?

There would be up/down buttons as there are for bookmarks in the File browser. So select an object in the dope sheet, then click an up/down button beside the list to move it up/down. I don't understand what you mean by "accidentally reordering the channels". An object's channels can already be reordered.

My apologies. I misunderstood what you were proposing (this is why mock-up images are useful ;)
