"Render Mask," modifier
As I transition from After Effects to Blender, there are a lot of little QOL features that I miss, one of them being trackmatts.
Currently, if you want to mask something out, you need to use a holdout material with a transparent background. This works in most cases, but it affects all objects in the scene, and has no way of being "inverted," to reveal the object instead of hiding it.
Obviously you can go through the compositor, but that involves setting up multiple different collections and render layers, all when I just want a simple textbox to slide into position.
What I propose is a "Render Mask," modifier, that allows you to select another object to be used as the "mask." By default, an object will not be visible behind the mask (possibly with different checkboxes for camera, direct, indirect, glossy visibility), and a checkbox to invert the mask so the object is only visible when it's behind the object.
This might be a little tricky, as to my knowledge no other modifier affects rendering directly, but if it were implemented might open up the doors to a lot more interesting rendering modifiers in the future.
