Hardware-Accelerated Video Rendering (Export) via VA-API on Linux
Problem: When exporting/rendering final videos on Linux, Blender's encoding is primarily CPU-bound. This means modern GPUs from AMD and Intel, which have powerful dedicated video encoding hardware, are not being utilized. This leads to very long render times and high CPU usage.
Proposal: Integrate support for the VA-API (Video Acceleration API) for hardware-accelerated H.264/H.265 encoding during the final render process. This would be an option available in the Output Properties, under the video codec settings.
Benefits:
- Drastic Speed Increase: Export times for projects could be reduced dramatically, from hours to minutes in some cases.
- Lower Power Consumption & CPU Usage: Frees up the CPU for other tasks and makes rendering on laptops more feasible.
- Strengthens Linux Support: Makes Blender an even more powerful and complete solution for content creators on Linux. As an Arch Linux user with an AMD Radeon RX 7600 GPU, this feature would be a complete game-changer for my workflow.
