Locking a view

Hi

I am used to working with 3DSMax and when a person chooses to work in the top view viewport surely they would like to stay there!? When in the top viewport the middle mouse button is used for panning = NOT to go into perspective view! This is incredibly annoying and a big reason why I'm struggling to get into Blender! A few people have complained about this and STILL nothing has been done about it? Please look and learn from Max? PLEASE let the top/front/side view remain the top/front/side view and let the middle mouse button be the panning tool!

Thank you Regards

You can even toggle quad view.

I find navigation in Blender super convenient and super comfortable with Right click. I know its weird but I just developed muscle memory and its natural to the point where if Im using other software and its having different set of hotkeys I cant se if if I cant switch it.

I wouldn't expect the navigation hotkeys to change depending on the viewpoint, that would be just confusing.

That being said, in the upcoming version 4.4 you can lock the viewport rotation (you can already download the beta version). Go in the sidebar N > View tab > View panel > View Lock sub-panel, there's a Rotation lock option:

In addition, maybe an option to automatically lock the rotation when in one of the axes' ortho view could be nice. Much like we already have an option to automatically get into ortho when entering an axis viewpoint:

And finally, as mentionned already, you are free to change your hotkeys if you prefer using Middle 🖱️ for panning. You might also be interested to look into the " Industry Compatible Keymap " which was designed for people coming from other DCCs and tries to use the "average" of all (see original design document: ⚓ T54963 Industry Compatible Keymap )

I use MMB for panning. Just change your hotkeys.
