Add a single loop cut to the knife tool

I'll diverge to maya for a sec. One of the best things about it is their multi-cut tool. you can make loop cuts and manual cuts quickly with the same tool. It's really quick and easy, something blender is usually good for.

I think all that the knife tool could use is a loop cut modifier key and a way to apply the loop cut in place vs. dead center of the polygons face.

It would be nice if we could also align the cut matching the exact distance along an adjacent edge. ie. each vert is the same distance from the existing verts next to it on one side.

AND

Aligning the cut to average between the two edges, the cut would be inbetween.

This would not be aimed at replacing the loop cut tool as that still has great value, but instead to add to the knife tool as a quick general purpose multi-tool.

Happy to help with design or experience. I can't code though.

I'm with you on giving the knife tool a spruce-up but taking a tool from another software wholesale isn't really Blender's style. Not saying you're wrong for this, but in my experience proposals like these rarely float without an extra push. Outlining exactly how this could work within Blender (short of coding it) would help sell the proposal I think.

The multicut tool is really cool but it exists in a different overall software paradigm to Blender. Many of the shortcuts used are already occupied, so it would take some thought to adapt it. Blender's knife tool does feel like an antique though.

Other features such as Edge Flow and placing a loop at the cursor are awesome and something I wish we'd carry over from Maya into the loop cut tool, even if a multi-purpose knife isn't possible.

Lastly you can already cut an average between two edges with the knife by holding Shift to snap to the center-line of each edge. Unless I've interpreted that proposed feature incorrectly!
