Some way to change the hardness of a grease pencil stroke after creating it

As far as I can tell, once a Grease Pencil stroke is created, its hardness is locked in and cannot be changed. This contradicts one of the core benefits of a vector-based drawing system like Grease Pencil (the idea that strokes can be changed at any time).

This could be fixed in a couple of different ways. One idea would be to have a tool in Edit Mode, similar to the Radius Adjustment tool. Another option would be a tool in Sculpt or Draw mode that functions as a "blur/sharpen brush," allowing users to draw over individual points to increase or decrease the stroke hardness.

what is stroke hardness?

juraj.mucha7

It determines opacity falloff from the middle of the stroke outwards. Basically makes the edges of the sroke more blurry.

Isn't this what the strength and thickness brushes in sculpt mode do or am I misunderstanding?

Vyach

Sculpt brush can`t adjust str evenly, it do not have constant mode, only accumulate. Perhaps GP have layers. And layer can have modified opacity. It is much easier and consistent to decrease opacity that way.

But sometimes you need increase it to certain even value. In that case Opacity modifier will help.

Having a brush with constant opacity/str fill will be handy too.

nope hardness is something else. It determines opacity falloff from the middle of the stroke outwards. basically makes the edges of the sroke more blurry.

As far as I know, currently there are only 2 ways to access this setting:

  1. drawmode - brush settings - advanced - hardness
  2. modifiers - opacity - change the mode to "hardness"

so there arent many ways to manipulate this setting therefore users mostly don't use it at all. Another problem of this setting is that it can be only applied on whole sroke, therefore in it's modifier it can't be further specified by verex groupes nor influence curve

Ah yes, very powerful. Great for magical effects, lighting, radial gradients.... Wow! I second the need this brush, or a vertex group target to opacity modifier, or its own Hardness modifier.

well I do agree, but I wonder when would be the right time to solve this problem cause' as far as I know there is complete GP structure rebuild planned as a part of new Eevee.

I put together an addon to address this for now. Search for Grease Pencil Extras. It enables changing the hardness/radius/pressure of strokes.
