Edit Mode > High Poly : prevention pop up

I can't tell how many times i've entered edit mode accidentaly on a sculpt (or other high poly models) resulting in an instant crash , or if i'm lucky, a long freeze before being in front of a unreadable and unusable edit mode.

The proposal here is to add a pop up to avoid those accidents.

proposal

"Edit Mode Prevention"

We could set a polygon limit ( like 500k in the example ) that could maybe scale depending on detected hardware ? I'll just leave this here

500 k ? .... Aahahaha ... Instead making popups like " 500 k warning " - we need Blender that can easily handle such mesh. Right now edit same hipoly models in 3D Max & in Blender it looks like Blender just can't use all of my workstation resourses. Max easily handle millions triangles mesh. Blender easily can show it in viewport but just try to enable edit and it die.

Problems is inside code algorithms...

Like when I want to select something inside high poly mesh with border select - it just allow me to select and all ok but if I want to do same with circle select it work like in 1 -2 fps (i7, 1070, 32 Gigs RAM ... ). Same with align - try in high poly align to Z min or max - few seconsd and it's done. Try same move but just Align Z - result is (Not respond) status in Task Manager. It looks like instead of align between some 10 selected from 300 k of model vertices it try to check & recalculate all the vertex of mesh...

We need Blender that can handle such mesh. Nut popups like " Oh shit I can't do this ".

@forestgumpovu4: many people complain about this. The good news is that they are looking for ways to improve it in the near future (source: Q&A Blender Conference 2018).

My take: Personally I know from experience that this might be Blender's Achille's heel. My complex models often exceed 20-40 million polygons and it becomes nigh impossible to work with but the same can be said for software like MODO. Im not sure if its possible to expect 20 million polygons stability but if they can get it up to atleast 5million it would be greatly appreciated.

This is a band-aid to the main issue, that Blender can't handle high density meshes. I remember pitting trueSpace from 2009 to Blender 2.79, and it still could handle two times as many poly's, and Softimage could handle 4x the density, from 2011. It would be good so that we don't automatically bog things down in the workflow - so yes.. I like the solution.. But I certainly hope to be able to edit meshes in the millions of poly's without a problem one day.

well the best is to make blender handle high poly much better 500k is not that much and should be piece of cake instead aim for 1,2+ million instead then this pop-up should show up in edit mode.

As long as there is a way to turn off the pop ups, No pop ups is one of Blenders best features in my opinion.

if Polygon_Limit == 0:
    enable_warning_popup = false

Done ! :)
