New key 1-9 & 0 default assignments
It happens really often when you are object mode to hit the 1-3 keys accidentally thinking you are in edit mode. Isolating one of the first Collections is not really helpful in case you have a ton of collections in various states (some hidden some not) and you can not bring back the visibility states.
- Yes you can change the keymap, and
- Yes i know the pre 2.8x community used them a lot.
- But specially for teaching classes its a source for problems and confusion.
In 2.8x + with local mode (/) and hide ops (ctrl + h etc..) and the great! outliner, would there not be a better use for the keys 1-9 & 0 ?
Ideas? Maybe jump right into edit mode pressing key 1-3 in case a mesh is selected. At least use the 0 key to restore the previous visibiliy state in the outliner. Not sure what the right-clickers think? and what else the keys could be used for default assignments?

Totally agree! Happens to me all the time and drives me crazy!
I like your idea of 1-3 keys going directly to edit modes, and then 4 could be object mode, 5 pose mode, etc.
As a bonus, this solution would help make mode switching faster and cleaner, which I think should be improved anyway considering how important it is in blender.
* @jon * Yep would love 4 for Element mode in mesh edit to select linked meshes (like in max) but thats another wish ;-)
When I started with Blender, I got confused lot of times when pressed 1 2 3 and then objects were hidden. After some time I figured out, so i agree, the default mapping is confusing :)
I have been hoping to be able to press 1, 2, 3 to directly switch to Edit mode (without being forced to press TAB first) almost since the first day I tried Blender 2.80. This TAB key still annoys me a lot.
My proposal:
It would still be possible to press 1 then Shift+2 to enable both Edit Vertex and Edit Edge modes at the same time. No regression here.
In Object mode, if no object is selected, pressing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0 would still hide collections (if people want that) but it annoyed me so much that I disabled these hotkeys in the keymap preferences (search for "Hide Collection" in 3DView > Object Mode > Object Mode (Global) ).
This TAB key annoys me so much that I even started coding an addon to bypass it. Unfortunately, my Python knowledge is very poor. If a talented addon developer wants to help me.. we can get in touch.
* @ xan2622 * FYI, you can set your own hotkeys for 1, 2 & 3 to go from Object mode to specific edit modes just using the keymap editor in your preferences. Use object.mode_set_with_submode
* @jon * Thank you. 👍
I created my own custom keymap preset, mixing the Blender and the Industry Compatible presets.
It works like a charm and it is now much faster to switch from Object mode to Edit (vertex/edge/face) modes and even Sculpting & Texture Paint modes.
For those who'd want to add these hotkeys (from the Industry Compatible preset) into your custom keymap preset, here are the required hotkeys to add into Object Non-modal :

Maybe someone from pre 2.80 times can tell the idea behind these assignments. Nowadays i use "tons" of collections and never know which Collections are top of the row. maybe you need it for character rigging etc.? Pose mode has similar assignments btw.. PLZ! - just messed up my outliner again working on a different workstation.
We already solved this. The Industry Compatible keymap works this way
* @billrey * Yeah, but kindly consider this for Blender keymap, it really drive most of us crazy.
yeah, that's like the first thing I untoggle when I start on fresh setup
I'd even say to leave numbers empty for users to map their own shortcuts
