Customisable Bokeh
I think blender should be able to have customisable bokeh like fringing, cutoff and the ability to use an image texture for bokeh. I think this would be a big step up for blender considering every other renderer has this feature

Bokeh texture was actually done for Cycles but never reached master: developer.blender.org/D1691 The other effect you are asking for is Optical Vignetting.
I know this is not the ultimate solution and I would like to see it done better in Cycles, but in the meantime, I've added it in the Photographer 4 add-on. Disclaimer: I'm the creator of the add-on.
* @chafouin * That's awesome, could you send a link to that addon?
* @william3 * gumroad.com/l/HPrCY I apologize if this is considered advertising, and I'll remove it if someone complains.
* @chafouin * So i just bought the add-on but i cant seem to check the install button

* @william3 * Nvm, i fixed it
* @chafouin * Dude! It's so good!!! thanks for recommending it

This thread has been here for almost a year now and we have a faster Cycles X, while there's a new Blender Animation project coming that will focus on realism render, I wonder why devs are kinda ignoring this feature for Cycles, it seems to be looking at developer.blender.org/D1691 there seems to be no one is working at it right now... Shouldn't this need to be update and implement in the Cycles default already for the new animation showcase?... What happened?
Absolutely, it would be awesome to have this feature in blender, or at least a part of what William said.
It will be nice for compositor, but for render it can be done same way as with camera: different shapes in front of camera.
* @ Vyacheslav * Yeah but it takes a lot of rendertime to actually see those changes. By having it built in to blender It will be faster
* @william3 * I am not sure, that true effect is possible without render. And new composite node is desirable ofc
* @ Vyacheslav * This is a typical Blender answer. It's like who needs a GUI you only need to change a few parameters in 3 config files to get it. Noob. For more advanced effects you can't even use geometry in front of the cam, geo don't model lens imperfection, dust or water droplets on the lens only the outer diaphragm shape. Other renderers like Vray can use shapes and custom textures for realistic and equaly fast Bokeh.
* @vangel * okay, thanks, now I see the point.
