Adding workplane functionality to the grid

Don't get me wrong, the 3d cursor has some great functionality but in some scenarios is really just feels like a poor man's workplane.

If any of you have ever used modo you will be familiar with the workplane. Like the 3D-cursor the workplane can be used to spawn in objects and to align rotations etc.

However where the 3d cursor is just one point. The workplane offers an entire grid which can be aligned to face normals or any other way the user would like (perhaps with a translate gimbal option for the grid itself). The gimbal would be able to align to the workplane and function along its axis.

We already have the grid, it just lacks function!

I'm switched from Modo to Blender! Workplane tool is super useful and fast, it will be cool to have it in Blender!

@Omgzdenek: Exactly thanks for the link

I make heavy use of the Custom Transforms in Blender and had been planning on making a workplane post so thanks for making one, seems like a natural evolution of it and would be super useful.

What it sounds like you're really asking for is improvements to the Custom Transform coordinates, rather than anything specifically related to the 3D Cursor.

@Jason van Gumster: Thats the main point , but there is more function than just transform coordinates. I mentioned the 3D cursor because it might make it somewhat redundant in some scenarios. See Omgzdenek' s link for more info

Like the idea! Maybe the world there should be some kind of hint that you are in another space?
