Implementing Python nodes in the compositor

I had been looking for a way to manipulate images in the compositor for years. Someone has (almost) implemented exactly what I wanted last year.

github.com/bitsawer/blender-custom-nodes

This allows you to treat images as numpy arrays /pillow images in our own python scripts and could be very powerful. Is there any plan to release something like this in the official branch?

As far as I can tell, it isn't planned. The Python API for nodes is interesting in that the nodes themselves are not functional. They define a function that gets executed elsewhere. That's part of the reason why you can't simply add a new image processing node in the compositor using the Python API. The node itself doesn't do anything; it just sets the inputs and outputs for image processing that's done in Blender itself.
