Compositor Strip for Video Sequence Editor

The idea is simple: Create a VSE effect strip that is a gateway into the compositor and back.

Example use:

1.You have greenscreen footage in strip A in VSE

  1. You add a "Compositor" effect strip on top of that.

  2. Now with that strip active you go to the Node Editor and select Compositor tab. Here you have a new Node Tree named after your Compositor Strip.

  3. By default the first input is connected to the output.

  4. You add a Chroma Key node and drop it between the input and output onto the noodle.

  5. You tweak the settings and you're done - you have chroma keying inside the sequencer!

By default you have 1 "Strip input" node present and one "Strip output" node. You can do whatever you want to process the data between the input and output.

Whatever you do will be performed inside the sequencer using Blender's fantastic compositor.

Also you can use multiple input strips - each will spawn a "Strip input" node so you may process a few video streams together. FOr example displacing one video using another to create a "heat" effect.

Aside from what lsscp has noted, it's also worth mentioning that there's a development vision/goal to keep VSE playback at realtime framerates. An effect strip that explicitly routes through the compositor is in direct opposition to that vision because the compositor simply doesn't work fast enough.

Well that's already broken then. Effect strips such as "transform" and "gaussian blur" drop the VSE to less than real time easy.

ok-what

There's a discussion about this here .
There are some differences in my proposal:

  1. it's applied directly on the strip instead of using an effect strip for it. The reason for that is that effect strips are being phased out. This would replace both the modifiers and the effect strips reducing clutter and duplication of features.
  2. Instead of having per-strip node trees, the node trees are added on the strip as a data block. This makes it possible to reuse node trees.
  3. You can't bring in multiple strips to the compositor (except with the meta strip feature). The reasons for that are in this reply
