Wireframe toggle?
How about having wireframe shade as a toggle so you can have wireframe, solid, or both rather then to toggle it only from the setting menu.
Just a thought. Maybe it's a dumb idea and I'm missing some important UX aspect.
(Personally, now I set ctrl+alt+shift+Z to toggle this option)

I sort of went for his idea with a script button.. but thought about it and backed out.
Turns a one-step gesture into a two-step. A little inconvenient, since some of us use wireframe to select backfaces quickly, and I can't think of many situations I've wanted to see the wireframe over solid outside of edit mode.
* @lap.illustrations * I see instead I use it constantly shade+wireframe and jumping on and off with the xray if i want to select vertex in the back. In 2.8 I almost never use pure wireframe.
