Dedicated snow simulation?
Recently a new paper on snow simulation was published, getting the same results is impossible in Blender. Maybe this new research paper could be implemented into blender in the near future?

Sebastian (blender's mantaflow developer) is making mantaflow plugin for granular effects (sand, snow etc.) twitter.com/sebbas/status/1321371647014805506
This is based on taichi.. Taichi elements (physics library written with taichi) is also getting some kind of blender integration btw. github.com/taichi-dev/taichi_blend very interesting project.
There is nice examples that what Taichi elements can achieve with gpu acceleration youtu.be/oiuSax_iPto
Also other interesting projects can be found dual.sphysics.org/index.php github.com/EPhysLab-UVigo/VisualSPHysics
And recently i found this: dynamix-physics.com/ but i have no idea what is the status or is it real project.
But sure this would be nice. At the moment fastest solution might be storm 0.5 effectivetds.com/resources/fx-tools/storm/ there is affordable indie and student versions.
I think something along the line of molecular/boids would be a better method- a grain simulator. if used correctly, particles can inform where to break/shift/recombine particle clusters or even actual geometry. this is what currently happens, in a way, with fluids.
