Integrate Open Timeline IO for edit list management

Blender's VSE is a great tool for making fast decisions about story and editing. But its not so good at rendering out or sending media to the compositor for effects creation.

You should be able to generate a Editing List, that you can transport outside of Blender or even to other places inside of Blender. Conversly you can use the same tool to import an edit list or Sequence from another .blend file or another application.

Pixar have an Open project for just this sort of thing. github.com/PixarAnimationStudios/OpenTimelineIO

**Overview OpenTimelineIO is an interchange format and API for editorial cut information. OTIO is not a container format for media, rather it contains information about the order and length of cuts and references to external media.

OTIO includes both a file format and an API for manipulating that format. It also includes a plugin architecture for writing adapters to convert from/to existing editorial timeline formats. It also implements a dependency- less library for dealing strictly with time, opentime.

You can provide adapters for your video editing tool or pipeline as needed. Each adapter allows for import/export between that proprietary tool and the OpenTimelineIO format.**

As a fan of the VSE, I support professional requests to see it become as robust as the industry requires.

Right now, many studios and developers are heavily involved in the Open Timeline IO Project, so it's becoming a serious thing.

F.E. it can be implemented in RV for reviewing and Avid, Autodesk, Netflix and Unity are trying to fit this into their workflows. It's obvious this can be beneficial for productions with several shots.

A little update on the subject :

Blender Animation Studio has been using OTIO throught an external addon. Worth checking :

Pixar opensource standard has played out well for blender's popularity and interoperability in the past. This is technically thinking in terms of Blender, because it will more greatly empower generalists to lead and develop projects effectively among other software environments. Also guys, I'm just so sick of using a certain adobe based alternative to VSE. (Trying not to mention specific software for Ton's benefit).

But yeah people are going to use that other software at the end of the day and it's nice to adapt to them without digging into it much.

Is there any plans to support AAF? It is industry standard for exchanging timelines in post production workflows, especially to external DAWs such as Pro Tools for audio mixing. tech.ebu.ch/docs/techreview/trev_291-gilmer.pdf

* @chrisbeeson * The issue here is that you could be asking Blender to re-compress files (if you choose copy -embed). Blender is not awesome at audio file handling and probably shouldn't spend dev hours on that non-core funtionality. Otherwise it would be a GREAT idea! :D

I agree this would be super cool. But I think OTIO is currently very new, dunno when it makes sense to include it in Blender.
