Autosave 1)on by default 2)to a permanent actual folder by default

  1. I just remember losing work from apps that didn't have autosave on by default. When you think about it, no one will complain if autosave is on by default, but people will complain if it's off when you needed it most.

  2. Also, it should save to a permanent actual folder by default, too.

By default, Blender autosaves to a temporary folder that erases anything on it every time you turn off your computer. So what happens if your entire computer freezes while using Blender? You have to force turn-off your pc, and then the autosave files are gone now because they were in a temporary folder.

Hm, that isn't that simple...

For the dedicated folder, yeah, why not. But as an option ; the current way of temp files is there for a reason: avoid clutter on your storage.

no one will complain from autosave being on by default

It already is:

autosave

And, to be honest, not everyone wants autosave to begin with. It can be a problem when people want to be in control of what is being saved, when, or of how much data they use.
Also, when you are working on a heavy scene, saving is a commitment, it can take quite some time just for writing the save file ; You really don't want to be stopped in your work every five minutes by your software freezing for thirty seconds because of an autosave.

I'm going on a tangent here, but I do want to point out that autosaves, or any automated backup are no perfect solutions in any case, and probably most importantly:

Relying too much on the software to save your butt is the best way to develop reckless practices that will harm you one day or another. Developing safe habits in a smart way (like saving manually and incrementally), is at the end of the day, the best solution and the most efficient across softwares/platform.

In other words: it's good to have safety nets, but not to the point where you don't even take care of yourself anymore.

lol I didn't know it was on by default. I'm gonna edit the title accordingly.

I had no idea autosave can be that annoying for big projects that take a long time to save. Maybe a quick pop-up asking "do you want to autosave?" would fix this "issue"? Pressing escape would quickly say "no". Then again, you might accidentally press "enter" on the exact moment the popup appears lol.

About good habits, I'm pretty sure I save often. But those rare occasions when I forget... :(

IMHO the popup doesn't fix the issue, it makes it worse. Now you are interrupted by a popup every five minutes x)

Oh, You reminded me that i have that custom autosave folder that i clean myself manually (to not accidentally lost some old file that i forgot to save)

And now its 52gb since last cleaning. Yea - thats not good idea if that folder wouldn't clean itself without user knowledge.
