Case sensitive rename
Case-sensitive rename tool. Inspiration is the default rename system in Modo.
Examples:
Select item and rename = Regular rename.
Select 2 items and rename = Rename both items into same name. Adds 01,02 suffix.
Select 3 items and add prefix/suffix. = Adds prefix/suffix to all selected items (keeping the original names)
Select 4 items and remove prefix/suffix = Removes prefix or suffix from all of the items.

But batch rename (Ctrl+F2) already can do all this stuff?
Prefix / suffix management, etc:
Removing these things from start \ end:
This is also done by the regular rename using F2 or holding down Alt when renaming the active object:
But i think the point of the proposal is that the other cases happen when renaming stuff without the need to bring a specific rename operator menu?
Could be a nice addition - quicker than the Batch Rename operator for simple things.
Anything Alt-Enter should default to be a part of multi object property editing by default, though. I'd think that Alt-Enter would be more useful to only rename or affect active of multiselection. Otherwise completely agree to all replies so far. Blender already does that and much more with the Ctrl-F2 menu and in much more detail as well. :)
Shameless plug of Multi-Object Property editing proposal to not split each batch of multi edit requests into a small separate topic:
