Grease pencil 3d shading

Could grease pencil layers interact with 3D render? Right now, gp objects can be manipulated in 3d space but at render they dont project shadows, etc. It would be great to have a "flat shading" switch for gp layers which would toggle between the current shading mode and the "3d" one. I don't think it is possible (has gp its own render engine?), but who knows?

Thanks in advance.

I think this is really a must have. For now you have to export your GP animation and reimport it as textured planes to have light & shadows casted. Mosts of the benefits of GP has are lost because of this, and this makes the workflow quite complex. If GP was able to cast light & shadows, it would be wonderful !

Yes, this would be a great feature. PNGs with transparencies can easily cast shadows, but they can't be edited with GP.
