Drop down menus

Since one of the main goal about the 2.80 update is to bring consistency everywhere across the software, leaving a ton of toggleable buttons that work for only one setting isnt very usefull and ergonomic. It take room and remind a lot the old 2.7x way of displaing options : Imgur Imgur

However, this is actually very usefull when you can add those to each other : Imgur

My proposal is to make all those toggleable buttons like drop down menus when they can not be added to each other. It fit better to the new UI style and make a bit more room. Imgur

I agree, most of the time it's just bloating the UI.

But it's more usable in some cases:

  • when we can combine multiple options (as you said)
  • when we need to switch the options often (its one click instead of two with the dropdown)

And maybe there are other cases.

I am not sure I agree that we should replace all the switches with dropdown menus. I believe the switches are more ergonomic and I really like the way the menus are organized right now. You can see all the options from the get go and activating them is only one click. It doesnt get more ergonomic than that. They dont even take more space in most cases as up to 3 values can easily be horizontally aligned on the same line. I might be biased on that because of my preference for ultrawide monitors.

When there are 4 or more options we should definitely consider switching to dropdowns though.

I am agree only in case of 6 buttons (color). But disagree for all other cases. As you can see Affect can use 2 buttons simutaneously.
