get grease pencil/annotation as a layer in video sequencer

in the VSE, add an image, add a text layer then add an annotation ! bam ! the text is hidden ! it could be so nice to have the choice by having a layer for grease pencil or annotations in the VSE timeline !

Actually, having grease pencil as layers in the VSE would transform Blender into a real 2D animation software ! that could be nice (and less confusing for pure 2D animators)

I guess you mean, a grease pencil strip?

Often people using GP, are drawing in individual scenes, and then add them as Scene strips in the Sequencer, they can be made transparent, by checking the box for that and use an alpha blend mode.

* @ tintwotin * So if you can utitilize GP 'scenes' in VSE, Don't we need a way to see the VSE output in the camera view of the 3d view so we know where to draw the GP? (sure, we can export the movie prematurely and use that as a background, but why not have a check box to display what the VSE would output?)

Annotations is not designed as animation Tool. If you want animate anything the way to go is GPencil object, not annotations. This is a design decission and we are not going to improve annotations in that way.

About Annotations by Video Sequencer by scene, actually the annotations are by Screem Area, not by Scene, so you cannot use different annotations datablocks in the same area for different scenes. If you want that, you need different Workspaces to have different areas.

nice try * @ tintwotin * ! But I couldn't make that work either ! On my Blender 2.9, Annotations in VSE are NOT per scene ! There is no way to layer that in any way... I guess you were talking about the 3D greace pencil... I tried with meta-strip, but that doesn't work either. the only way to make it work would be to make my comments over the video background in the 3D viewport, and keep the text in the sequencer on another scene ! That works, but that is becoming very slow to work with and always switching from on scene to the other... a nightmare !

So I see 2 options here :

  • a grease pencil or Annotation strip : that would make grease-pencil more consistant with the 3D part and would offer a new simpler workflow for 2D animators.
  • change annotations coding so it works per scene ! Maybe that is a bug actually...
