Blender Asset Data Format

I'd love to see some kind of special file format for Blender's Asset manager, when it is done, so that we can easily exchange and import assets. I think .blendasset would be a good name haha

The format sould be a stripped down version of .blend with no dependencies on external files - textures etc sould be saved in the file. There should also be some meta data stored:

  • The name of the original author
  • The license + link to the license
  • A name + description
  • Some kind of manual / help
  • A hash so that you can verify if it is the original asset / not modified by someone

The file should only include the stuff that the author wants to be shared (for example an object w/ mesh, a node setup, textures and modifiers), and not all of the other info that is being stored in a blend file (layouts, scale, other objects in the scene, etc). Being able to save modifier stacks, presets (for example for particles or Animation Nodes) would be neat, too.

Opening a .blendasset file with Blender would result in a prompt asking you if you either want to edit the asset or import it into your asset library. The asset library should be (like in a game engine) a normal folder hierarchy with a lot of .blendasset files. So if you manually copy anything in there, you will be able to see it after restarting blender.

Hope someone reads this lol

I just found this after searching for 2 days: Control C, copy to buffer, Control V to paste in another .blend

I agree...I have made a few pieces in the game engine that I'd like to add to a library for use in other projects. I hope this is a suggestion that is added to Blender.
