Orbit Auto-Depth Keybind

Change the auto-depth setting from a global setting to a keybind or toggle.

Dear Blendelopers, I'm a total beginner in 3D and I would like to suggest a small addition to the navigation options that feels more natural to me. I have some past experience with 3D game editors, such as Distance (a 2018 racing platformer), in which I grew accustomed to the following way of navigating:

  1. Click a desired pivot point.
  2. Press a hotkey.
  3. Orbit... and continue working.

The nice thing about it is that I don't have to always be precise with clicking, and I can change the pivot point only when I need it.

I tried both the default configuration in Blender and the auto-depth setting and neither is always optimal. I wish that it could be changed by a simple hotkey. What are your thoughts?

It seems like something that should be relatively easy to do, so if you don't agree with it, I know a bit of programming and maybe I can implement personally. Any help with that (where to start) would be awesome.

Anyway, thank you for your consideration. Have a good day!

Alt click a surface to set the pivot point of your orbiting.

If you want to visualize that point you can shift+right click to move the 3d cursor to that location and then Menu - View > Align View > Center View To Cursor. I change shift+c to that command.

If you just want to focus on the origin point of a selected object you can press [ . ] key on numpad or [ ~ ] key and then View Selected.

If you want to focus on a selected vertex or face do the same as mentioned above while in edit mode.

Thank you very much for your patient help! I thought I looked everywhere but missed this little shortcut because I wasn't using a mouse (no middle-click). I know how to use it now.

I accept full responsibility for this error and I will check with the proper channels before making suggestions in the future. Bye!

Don't make proposals if you are a total beginner. Most total beginner proposals are just questions that have answers but you didn't bother to ask the question first in places meant for asking questions
