Allow setting of the default Asset Library Import Mode (currently it defaults to Append, which can cause problems if you meant to Link!)
The
params.import_type
dropdown in the
Asset Library Panel
defaults to
Append (Reuse Data)
. For large projects, users may prefer it defaults to
Link
- if you accidentally forget to change it from Append to Link ervery single time, it's not immediately obvious, and you can end up with a real mess to fix!
I would suggest adding an option to change the default, perhaps to
Preferences>Interface>Editors>Asset Library>Default Import Mode
What do you think? Another option would be to have a clearer visual indication of whether you're linking or appending when you drag an object in, but I feel like setting the default might be a simpler option to implement?

Not only it should be a setting, but it should also allow having different settings for each asset type.
As you've noted linking is usually wanted for projects (with multiple .blend files). It's a different story for personal asset libraries that you'd want to reuse in different projects. So part of the asset system design has long been the differentiation between personal cross-project and project asset libraries.
Essentially, Blender should know when your asset library belongs to a single project, and use linking by default then. This is where the concept of Blender Projects comes in, that brings knowledge to Blender about the different Blender files in a project, the project assets, scripts, etc. There's plenty of agreement amongst devs that this is amongst the high priority projects.
Now meanwhile we could add a per asset library option to use linking by default. Issue is once the option is added, we can't easily remove it later when an arguably better solution is in place. But I'm considering to add this option as experimental feature or such, for people who really want it already.
