Grease Pencil Shrink-wrap

Currently you can draw directly on a 3d mesh with the new 2.8 Grease Pencil. However, having a shrink-wrap modifier to a 3d mesh object would be nice and very useful (being able to disable for editing of drawing, then re-project onto mesh when finished).

Implemented in version 3.1 developer.blender.org/rB459af75d1ed5

Hologram

As of now this is completed. Though there seems to be an accuracy problem in that parts of a Grease Pencil object are projected below the surface, whereas others are floating above.

The only official mention of this issue that I could find is a bug report from 2019: developer.blender.org/T61854

Here the issue is demonstrated very well.

The developers at the time believed that the proper solution would be a shrinkwrap modifier for grease pencil, so it looks like this proposal is on track with that.

For now - to draw on mesh surface there is a bit of a hacky workaround thanks to Sophie Jantak: youtube.com/watch

Essentially it is this:

  • Give mesh a solidify modifier with an offset of 1, hide modifier in render view
  • Draw with placement set to Surface & offset to 0

Now the stroke will be placed uniformly against the mesh regardless of zoom level, the only real issue being that while working the strokes are still slightly clipped by the mesh - you can toggle the modifier in viewport on/off to see it more clearly if needed.

Hopefully we will see a nicer official solution soon :)

I'm sure this feature is going to be available soon, it's just too useful to not be. The only problem I can see if that the fill colour will probably bug out on extremely warped greasepencil objects.
