I use BatchOps addon for this and much more to control complex scenes. It has full management like Apply, Remove, Rename etc. for most data blocks like modifers, textures, lights, constraints as well as filters by Selection, Visibility etc

In what scenario is that needed? That sounds niche and one-off use-case to me, and that's what scripts are good for.

When you want to copy/paste a mesh from one instance of blender to another, but ONLY the mesh. (But agreed, this does feel like an easy solution to get a script involved.)

I don't think that's very niche. I think it's pretty common to import models (downloaded models, imported SVG vectors), where we only want the object data and don't care about the materials.

Indeed I think this could be useful, and a "Good First Issue" for developers trying to get into Blender coding.

I imagine a Remove All Materials entry in the Clean Up submenu in the Object menu.

Who's up to the task? :)
