Add point for curve tool

I really love working with curves and it seems that Blender curves are amazingly versatile.

The only thing i really miss is to have a simple pen tool that lets you add extra points to the curve at specific places (not having to select 2 verts and then subdiv).

Also having some control over the curve visibility in the viewport would be awesome. If i have a bunch of curves now it looks like a hairy mess . Being able to change th curve color would rock.

I agree that the built-in curve functionality in Blender is lacking- but in the short term there is a free addon that greatly enhances the capabilities of curves (including adding/removing points at arbitrary spots in a curve): Flexi Bezier Tool

* @testure * Oh cool! -- It's addons like this that make me crazy when I see Blender hasn't implemented them natively. This looks great! -- Is there any way to promote these so that Blender can see them? These kinds of quality-of-life addons need some spotlight.

testure

* @awesomedata * Blender can already see them. It's up to an addon developer to decide whether or not they want their addon to ship with Blender. Many choose not to do it because they will be bound to Blender's update cadence and will have to actively maintain it for the addon to remain part of the Blender release package.

Just because users like something doesn't mean it should ship with Blender- it could even prove unhealthy for the addon's growth.

* @testure * It also makes it a lot harder to monetize the addons.

* @testure * I don't think it should be shipped with Blender because I "like" it -- I think it should be shipped with Blender because it supports standard modeling operations and workflows. Basic UX and workflows for modeling that apply across the board would improve because of an addon like this -- i.e. not just rendering, but for asset development / animation / modeling / etc. (In other words, something like this is foundational to the basic user-experience.) Yes, it is "cool" as I said, but it isn't exactly revolutionary. It's just more user-friendly than vanilla Blender UX and very much hidden to most new users (and even older users like me, who only lightly use Blender's feature set).

* @awesomedata * then talk to the addon developer and ask him to add it to Blender and maintain it from here until someone else decides to take it over. My point is- that's the only way it's going to happen. So long as the 'need' is being filled, why would the blender foundation put development dollars into solving a problem that is already solved? I suppose they could just steal the guy's code, it is GPL after all- but then there's that maintenance problem again. Welcome to open source development :)

I'd love to see a pen tool added to the curves in Blender. I think Blender already handles curves really well, but I agree the feature needs some polish.

Simply being able to click a point on the curve to add one, or remove a point by right-clicking, for example to delete it, then turning a point into a sharp or bezier point and connecting curves together to be easily extruded or used as paths would be excellent. Better-yet -- drawing curves on the face of a model so they can be quickly converted to geometry (e.g. for eyelid projections for things like Anime or cartoon-styled models).

Curves are a very weak point in Blender to me. :(

SO much more could be done with them to ease general modeling...

Retopoflow 3 (still in beta) can do this, and a lot more.

* @Josephbburg * -- I think Retopoflow 3 should just be integrated into Blender.

* @awesomedata * They talked about it briefly on the Beta Announcement stream for RF3. But I don't remember what they said. They are aware that everyone wants this. And even for people who can't afford it, it's available on GitHub. I did buy RF2, but I might just get the new version from GitHub anyways since it's easier.

* @Josephbburg * Oh god. I hope they said yes. Blender would be on-par with the Z for retopology -- and, honestly, for manual stuff, it'd have it beat.

* @awesomedata * i completely agree, this would be such an improvement.

Slice (as for links in shader editor) will be cool solution

* @impacman * Slice would give me the impression it will cut the curve in half rather than refine it. But it is equally handy ofcourse. Cheers.

* @kurt * have you tried to add a control point to link between nodes inside shader editor? Alt or cntl + mouse stroke through link( don't remember exactly) when you will try you will get what i mean. It's much much handy than pen tool..

soont3kk Author

* @impacman * i see what you mean. I think the nodeconnections could use a rethink as well though. I would love a rightclick on the nodeconnection adding functions like 'reroute' , 'disconnect' and being able to move the reroute dot. But that's another issue :)

I'm exploring curves as the moment as an alternative to Toon Boom Harmony. Curves could do with a lot of love.
