Alembic for Particle Cache
Currently particles are cached on a per-frame basis. While this is fine for a simple scene, for huge scenes this can take a long time, and is also incredibly inefficient when integrating with an asset management system (especially if each file has to be tagged & added to the database).
It would be much faster and more convenient if we could use something like alembic for particle caching, that would allow us to store particles with a single file instead.

Hello everyone, any news on this feature in the upcoming 2.8 Beta? I think it's being released under MIT license.
actually, it looks like we can export the particle data as alembic.. but when it comes back in, it's just mesh data. It would be better if we could use it just like the regular particle cache system.
And it looks like Sybren will make your idea a reality : code.blender.org/2017/03/improving-alembic-support-in-2-79-and-2-8/
