double click to open fbx (FBX file associated with Blender)
I would like to be able to set FBX file associated to Blender so if I double click .fbx file in windows explorer that would launch up Blender and allow me to work & edit directly on that .FBX file.
The idea is similar as how this works with Photoshop where you can work with the PSD files but you can also load in .TGA or .PNG files, work on them and save directly into that file format by hitting ctrl + s without the need to re-export.
Very similar system also in Modo. You can setup the FBX file association to open up Modo. Then once opened you can work & save directly into the FBX file. You can obviously turn that into modo scene by doing "save as".
Example: In Blender this could work like this:
You would assign Blender to your FBX files.
Then double clicking on the FBX file would open up Blender with the FBX file linked to the scene. Hitting "Save" would result in updating the FBX file. You could still do "Save as" and turn this into Blend file.

I think it's possible by associating .fbx files with some command line command that starts blender and runs import fbx operator.
Saving is possible by overriding ctrl-s using some addon.
Probably the best way for it work would be to establish new import fbx operator in the addon that will allow to specify default import settings and it will also allow you store in current blender session that fbx was opened and Ctrl+S should save as .fbx rather than .blend. That way it will be still possible to work with .blend files without noting a difference.
Anyways, this workflow will kind of imply that data saved and loaded almost natively to .fbx. Given the amount of problems with .fbx import/export we have and very limited access to FBX API Blender have, it will be only confusing. Not to mention what Ton Roosendaal thinks of FBX format in general and how much Blender is interested in not helping FBX format grow any more.
This is not that easy until Autodesk make FBX open-source or atleast allow some API permission unfortunately Autodesk doesnt want to share the code with anyone and unnecessary complicate the FBX version each year so no one can make consistent code to work with FBX. even Ton roosendal criticize Autodesk over twitter. see thee post here. twitter.com/tonroosendaal/status/697448738764288000 youtube.com/watch
