Blender's own version of an FBX file (and FBX Exporter)
I believe Blender's current FBX Exporter is handicapped because of the FBX format itself.
There are so many limitations to the FBX format and it is so delicate that the export process can very easily break. Why can't I have large animations files? Why do modifiers and materials make a model's shape keys not export? Why didn't my visibility keys export? Why is my model exporting at 90 degrees? Why is it the wrong scale? Etc, etc, etc...
In 2020 Unity was (and possible still is) an official Development Partner with Blender. Use their help:
I propose Blender creates an industry equivalent to the FBX format.
An open-source alternative to FBX that fulfills all the requirements that Unity, Unreal, Godot, need, but with a far more stable and user-friendly experience.
As an Indie Game Dev the very worst part of my job is exporting FBXs. Most of the time it comes down to trial and error, and it is as exhausting as it is frustrating.
For example: There is no way to export visibility states in Blender's FBX Exporter.
An animator will often hide/unhide an object as a handy technique to swap something out, however there is no way to export those keys from Blender. Why?
You can export them from Maya.
Perhaps that's because FBX is an Autodesk proprietary file. A black box that no one can tamper with.
I assume Blender's FBX Exporter is at the mercy of Autodesk and what they will/won't allow to be known.
Screw that.
Blender is extremely well-respected, and the devs have overwhelmingly proven themselves as extraordinarily talented and adept.
Make your own FBX equivalent. BIF, Blender Interoperable Format. (As an example).
Then get Unity to allow BIF imports. Unreal and Godot to follow.
Imagine the way you could make exporting so much simpler! And robust!
I bet you all the game devs will support this idea.

I think the solution here is USD. Maybe with an option to flatten composition arcs on export. But adding yet another interchange format isn't going to help, as much as I hate FBX
