The ROOKIE! Script Repository

Learning python is maybe not the goal for many 3D artists, but many tasks can easily done with some really basic scripts. For me as a more generalist 3D archviz guy it is still a hurdle to dive deep into coding, but with some copycat strategies i became a lot more productive after my first year in blender (former max). A really helpful source are the built in templates to start your own scripts. Even if the examples are really basic many scripts also require some deeper understanding like classes UI stuff etc. and are meant to be the basis for more worked out addons. Besides these design guides there are tons of "really" basic scripts floating around in the web, most of them doing a really good job for various tasks. Many of them you could even be stacked and run like batches. Some of these scripts are still written in 2.x python, easy to fix for 3.x but when you are stressed out you have no head for coding.

So my idea:

  • Why not add a third category in the templates menu for scripting where a bunch of these scripts could reside, called maybe "Community collection" or "Rookies standards" or ? whatsoever.
  • The scripts should follow some rules of simplicity like : No more than 20 Lines of code, no Interface, just one operation just run from the scripts window.
  • Of course well documented so also non programmers can adapt the code, and get into scripting.
  • The collection could/should be maintained/provided by the community (not to waste time of devs. doing serious stuff ;-)), refreshed once a while at least when there is technical need for (major releases, new python...).
  • The selection could also be done by voting or a competition maybe (like the MatCaps).
  • Why be part of the distribution? Because its easier and more reliable.

What kind of scripts would i think of: Not sure what the community needs, i adapted some improving my pipline, like rendering batch cameras, changing object properites randomisation, mesh cleaning... There are thousands! but which are the Best and most needed?
