Weirdly enough it's already semi officially in blender:
Turn on 3d viewport pie menus addon which comes with blender and disable all other pie replacements except origin (some are okay or add other new functionally). Problem is what it's off by default.

CTRL ALT X - Yikes. But yes, it has Origin To Selection which works as expected. It would be nice if it were in Shift S.

It appears to only work in Edit mode. It would be good if it worked in Object mode as well since Blender retains the edit selection. That way multiple objects can be assigned a common origin from the vertex selection.

You're most likely aware of this, and it's a couple extra steps, but you could just do that with the 3D cursor... I don't really see the devs adding something that deals with selected vertices you can't see when you're in object mode

Yes I am aware. I have written a python macro that loops through each of the selected objects and assigns their origin to the edit mode selection and thought that functionality would be useful to the masses.
That is after many many Shift S Cursor to Selection, Object origin to 3D Cursor myself.
