Would it be possible to use grease pencil in UV?

Would it be possible to use grease pencil in UV and have rig for controlling individual strokes positions/shapes on object level rigging?

UV and Grease pencil are considered 2D, but you can also add 3D strokes to model.

The basic idea I'm trying think is the ability to make controllable shapes in Grease pencil to be used on UV. Strokes have modifiers that can be controlled to some extent.

For example, the thickness modifier custom curve, these points in XY position can't be currently passed to rigging.

Simple shape change/moving around, opacity for fading and strenghtening strokes and line thickness changes would be the minimum.

Sorry, but I don't really see what this has to do with UV editing. How exactly would you use UV to control strokes?

You can already use an armature and/or lattices to change the stroke's shape and move it (although the GP weight painting tools leave something to be desired). What else are you looking for?

It sounds like you want the points in a custom curve to be able to have drivers attached so you could control the points in a modifier with a rig. Not sure how feasible that would be, but could be useful.

This idea would give access for NPR and stylized rendering modelers to expand what is possible. We have seen posts already how grease pencil has been used in 3D enviroment. Unfortunately these 3D strokes have to be offset from the mesh surface to avoid interference. I see potential in grease pencil use in UV as animatable objects that are controllable, not static pictures.

As example youtube.com/watch could used mixed 2D/3D approach, where part of the strokes are embedded in UV space and the the rest are in 3D.

If this is feasible, then you could animate the strokes in UV to create different styles of changes during animation, similar to shader. Anime expo 2022 on Trigun showed how they had to move and deform eyes/nose/mouth to get that certain expression shown.

So you mean having a grease pencil layer that gets rendered above the 3D mesh's material? One object that has a mesh and GP drawings rendered on the mesh's surface instead of separate objects for the mesh and GP drawings?

That is correct, or pass unwrapped UV to Grease pencil and make everything there. At this point it would be best to discuss if this is feasible and fits with Blender visions.

Got informed that similar type solution is work in progress.
