Smart Vector to detect deformation of an object (VFX)
There is a function in nuke that is called smart vectors. It basically generates motion vectors of an area that you can select and store them for later use. Its recording the deformation of the surface to apply to your image or object you want to put in the video.
That allows you to put a scar in a face without a 3d model tracked to his head with the scar. Its reducing the amount of work to a fraction.. Removing tracking markers or..
I dont have high hopes on it to be in blender because the vfx area is not in the focus at the moment but i hope that can be changed soon.. at least a bit.
When you have an idea of the implementation what paper is used or what else feel free to tell me.
Here is a quick demo:
When you have further ideas drop me a comment.

Yeah dense vectors from Optical Flow analysis would be great in lots of places in Blender. BUt due to cacheing of frames its unlikely to happen. Blender is built on a strictly "Current Frame Aware" basis.
This would be fantastic! Only problem is that it falls under the Compositor category, which doesn't really have any developers working on it.
Considering Blender is a 3D animation package first and VFX second, I would also imagine stuff like this is pretty far down on the Todo list. Maybe one day we will get a "VFX code quest," or something, but for now it's pretty unlikely.
Current solution would be to use 3D projection.
* @Zach Hixson * Yep i have the same thoughts but its just a big wish from me here.. The dev that brought us tracking is working on other things in blender.. They are on it to hire more devs so i hope there will be one for the compositor or vfx part..
I was going to suggest this as well... Jahka the developer of the particle system had a patch that added to the VSE frame interpolation. It might still be found on his web site was for before blender 2.49 I think. Lol that was a while ago. Here is a link jahka.blogspot.com/p/code.html
