Keep Triangles - Option for subdivision

I know: triangles are evil. You are not supposed to use them. But there are niece use cases, they are the most practical Topology. And the issue is: this makes your model virtually unsubdividable.

And it's because triangles are bad, but it is also because Blender converts the triangles into quads during subdivision.

In most cases, this is the better option. But not when you actually need a Tri-Topology. an image showing, how a tri is converted into 4 tris instead of 3 quads for a much smoother topology on an icosphere

So my proposal would be a checkbox, than when checked keeps triangle topology when subdividing. Kind of how it works when you add a Icosphere with a higher level of subdivision vs when you subdivide an Icosphere using modifiers.

AFAIK, it comes down to using a different subdivision algorithm. No need for a checkbox, there's already a UI for choosing different algos, let's just add a new entry to it.

Do you mean the simple vs Catmlucc-clark thing? because I'd argue you need that keep-triangles option for both smooth and flat subdivision.

But ... I also remember there being more options on that subdivision surface modifier once, but I can't really find them anymore :P

Sounds like a duplicate of: blender.community/c/rightclickselect/K8jY/

and apparently that feature is being worked on

Found my way here, looking for how to do this!
