Real time X/Y/Z symmetry for modeling

As a Blender user, I’d like to request a built-in real-time symmetry system for Edit Mode, similar to the functionality seen in Maya. While Blender offers tools like the Mirror Modifier, Auto Mirror, and X-Axis Mirror, none of them provide true live symmetry that works seamlessly without needing a symmetrical starting mesh or modifiers.

Right now, the current methods come with limitations:

Mirror Modifier doesn’t allow direct edits on both sides

Auto Mirror resets geometry and breaks if you make custom edits

X-Axis Mirror only works if the mesh is perfectly symmetrical in topology, which is fragile and breaks easily

By contrast, Maya allows for real-time symmetry editing across any axis, using a system that finds the closest corresponding point on the opposite side of the mesh and not relying on identical topology. This lets artists model fluidly without worrying about maintaining perfect symmetry manually.

Proposed Features: A real-time symmetry toggle in Edit Mode (X, Y, or Z axis)

Doesn’t require modifiers or deleting half the mesh

Doesn’t depend on the mesh having perfectly symmetrical topology

Should use spatial mirroring logic (e.g. closest-point matching) to allow symmetry on slightly asymmetrical meshes

Updates edits live (move, extrude, insert loops, etc.) across the chosen axis

This kind of tool would significantly improve modeling workflows, especially for character artists, mechanical designers, and anyone who wants to prototype symmetrical designs quickly. Sculpt Mode already supports this well, it would be incredibly powerful to bring this behavior to Edit Mode too.

Thanks for your hard work on Blender and for considering this feature.

yes pleaaaaase!!! Modeling symmetrically, as you can do in Maya, is very frustrating with blender. Many modifiers do not work symmetrically, you cannot see the symmetric selection, and if the uvs are already done, using the mirror modifier will destroy them. it is an essential feature and a huge flaw for blender.

For a better reading of your proposal you could to attach some examples - pics or short vids...
