GIF Support

It would be amazing if we could get GIF support for things like reference images. In the case of using it as a texture it could be similar to a movie sequence.

It's already supported, although not well implemented:

The issue is that, it's not supported by the Import Images Planes addon nor the "image sequence" entry in the node editor that would allow to automatically setup the node as an image sequence with correct settings.
When manually traying to use the Image Texture node, GIF files are not part of the file format displayed by the file browser filter, you have to disable the filtering.
And even after that, the node isn't set up, so you have to set it to movie mode, and manually figure out what are the frames and frame offset values.

This is what needs to be fixed.

There are no GIFs on the GNU web site because of the patents (Unisys and IBM) covering the LZW compression algorithm which is used in making GIF files. These patents make it impossible to have free software to generate proper GIFs.

Most like something related to this headache is why Blender doesn't care about GIFs.

If using macos (unix) or linux or the ubuntu on windows free tool from the microsoft store you can convert gifs to any other format with one command: unix.stackexchange.com/questions/40638/how-to-do-i-convert-an-animated-gif-to-an-mp4-or-mv4-on-the-command-line

Or use an addon like Bligify

Though this one use Gifsicle which is GPL 2.0 and ImageMagick which have its own license .

How can work within Blender?

Also, Blender uses ffmpeg which supports gif from the normal "no extra formats with weird licensing headaches" so, shouldn't Blender be able to output GIFs?
